East Los Angeles, CA -- Former boxing champion and Olympic gold medalist Oscar De La Hoya has checked himself into a rehab facility, according to ESPN.com. No details have been released on the nature of his addiction, but we learned from a worker at Oscar's local Panaderia that his habit of eating pan dulce while watching old highlights of himself finally caught up with him.
The bakery worker said that during the days leading up to rehab, Oscar was visiting the bakery up to 10 times a day, buying the same items each time: 3 pieces for a dollar (a conchita, a marranito, and the hard one that looks like a rock), 2 empanadas, and several of the other more expensive ones, including the jumbo slice of 3 leches cake.
"It's no secret that he's been addicted to old highlights of himself for quite some time now", said the Panaderia worker, "but lately, he had put on a few more pounds and could be seen around the neighborhood with bread crumbs and bits of sugar all over his beard, hair, and clothing". The bakery worker said he denied selling Oscar the sweet bread once, out of concern - when he had come into the bakery for the 5th time within a one hour span - but said he gave in when Oscar threatened him, threw a few conchas at him, dangled money like a mad man, knocked out the ATM machine with a left-hook, and told him that "the customer is always right".
No one close to Oscar was available for an interview, but Oscar did release the following statement: "After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I need to work on. Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws". He asked people for privacy, and to respect his relatives while he gets over his insatiable appetite for pan dulce, especially marranitos dipped in milk.
