Tucson, AZ -- In response to the Tea Party, eccentric Hispanic Arizonians have made up their own movement, called the Tequila Party. They have chosen Ramon Ayala's "Tragos Amargos" - the one song that unifies all Latinos - as their theme song, and have named their mascot, a 3 year old dog, Obamentirosito. The group is scheduled to hold its first political rally and get-out-the-vote event this Saturday in Tucson, Arizona.
Tired of Obama and the Democrats playing Latinos for fools on issues like immigration, the unapologetic Tequila Party hopes to put pressure on Democrats to take Latino's concerns more seriously [don't amuse yourself, Republicans - they don't like you any better]. Some, however, are not too thrilled about the party's name. "Don't they know that no one will take them seriously if they're called the Tequila Party", said Pedro Lopez, a native Arizonian who says he had confirmed his attendance to the rally on Facebook and had even bought a few bottles of Cabrito Tequila before finding out it wasn't the type of Tequila party he had in mind.
Their odd, but creative name helped the group garner national attention, but interest immediately waned when DeeDee Garcia Blase, president of the Tequila Party National Movement, said the following words: "It's not a movement to encourage drinking … ".
Turnout at tomorrow's rally will determine if the party has any traction, or if it's just another flavor-of-the-month political group, like last month's Pan Con Leche Party, which didn't even make it to an opening rally because it was attracting the wrong kinds of people.
