Los Angeles, CA -- Liberal Latinos are entrenched in a divisive battle with conservative Latinos over what to consider the most dangerous place for a Latino child: inside a pregnant mother's womb, or inside a neglected party jumper. The fierce battle is being waged on the streets of California, with the winner hoping to sway public opinion in their favor.
Conservative Latinos attacked first, placing jumbo billboards throughout California last week that read: "The most dangerous place for a Latino is in the womb". "There's no other place in the United States where over 200,000 Latinos die in a year", said Alfonso Aguilar, executive director of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, which is sponsoring the billboard campaign.
In response, a liberal Latino group - claiming the anti-abortion billboards are deceitful and dishonest - released its own billboards with the message: "The most dangerous place for a Latino is in a party jumper". "No other place in the United States where over 200,000 Latinos die in a year? That's what they would like you to believe. What they don't want you to know is that twice as many Latinos die from freak accidents involving party jumpers each year", said Robert Pineda, executive director of the Latino Partnership for Liberal Principles.
"They're not interested in facts; they just care about their right wing political agenda to destroy pro-choice - that is what their campaign is all about. If they really did care about Latinos dying, then they'd agree with us that the most dangerous place is inside one of those jumpers that Latinos use as babysitters during a party", added Pineda.
On the streets of Los Angeles, the billboards have received support from both sides, showing just how divisive the issue is. "Yes, I agree about the abortions. Too many Latinas have abortions, but I also blame Planned Parenthood, because they push abortions on low income communities just to meet their daily quota of baby deaths, which is given to them directly by the devil", said Araceli Ortega, a supporter of the anti-abortion billboards.
"This is not about Latina mothers or their babies, just damn conservatives trying to scare people so they can tell us what we can and cannot do. I agree that more people die from party jumper accidents; I've lived through that horror myself... lost a lot of good men back in elementary", said a teary eyed Javier Gutierrez, who supports the liberal billboards that point out the truth about the most dangerous place for a Latino.
"I guess Rush Limbaugh can take a break from his daily vitriol against us, knowing that conservative Latino groups like this one are now springing up and attacking their own kind", added Gutierrez.
