Compton, CA -- After hours of confusion and occasional discussions early Wednesday morning, the Compton City Council found a way to avert a shutdown by laying off all of the city's employees.
The new budget, approved by a 3-1 vote, will allow the city to pay off all its bills on schedule, but going forward, the responsibilities of those laid off will shift to its elected officials, according to Councilwoman Janna Zurita.
"It's not like our city workers did much to begin with - lets face it", said Councilwoman Janna Zurita, who cast the deciding vote this morning. "Their trivial responsibilities have been divided between us elected officials, and starting August 2nd, our city will be run in a more efficient manner by us".
According to Councilwoman Lillie Dobson, who proposed the new budget and personally offered to do half the city's work by herself, she is set to begin lessons this Thursday on how to drive a bus.
Her new responsibilities will include public transportation, department of motored vehicle services, and utilities.
"I got it all figured out", said Councilwoman Lillie Dobson. "I will drive a bus in circles around Compton, providing public transportation. To make efficient use of my time, I will let anyone on board pay his or her electric, gas, and vehicle registration bills directly to me. If they want, they will also be able to use my Blackberry and pay online – piece of cake."
