Los Angeles, CA -- Former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya's recent confession about his hidden world of drug and substance abusive did not make him any new fans. In fact, the former Olympic gold medalist is said to have lost thousands of supporters after admitting that his days of drinking and cocaine sniffing accompanied by a prostitute here and there and some occasional cross-dressing weren't even fun.
In prior decades, the news of a drugged celebrity dressed in drag - high heels, fishnet stockings, and frilly lingerie to be exact – who cheated on his wife, drank toxic amounts of alcohol, and inhaled lines of coke off the chest of semi-conscious prostitutes would have on its own disappointed many.
By today's standards, however, where even celebrities' pets have been caught hitting the needles to escape their demons, De La Hoya's reckless conduct did not surprise many.
People's initial reaction to De La Hoya's tainted past, according to a Univision poll, was that of indifference. Many even claimed to have already known that the vato liked to drink and cross-dress.
According to street sources, what truly disappointed was his admittance that those late night parties with gorgeous women and heaven-like quantities of drugs and liquor were not even fun.
"Really? Not even fun? Then what the hell was he doing?" said Alfredo Rivera, a loyal fan who has followed De La Hoya since winning the Olympic gold medal in 1992. "If I recall correctly, you are supposed to party like a rock star and then, maybe, rehab like a rock star - but the keyword is party, synonym for fun. You don't pretend to party like a rock star, not find it amusing, yet still end up in rehab. What an idiot!"
The displeasing revelation came during the second half of De La Hoya's interview with Univision, when he said, "There were women, there were drugs, there was alcohol. Yes, it's all true and I'm telling you that it was. I'm starting to remember everything because now I can think clearly and it was not fun, none of it. It wasn't even fun."
The new insight into the former champion's experience with drugs and alcohol is said to have also disappointed some of his sponsors. After listening to the interview, a well-known Tequila brand walked away from a contract with Golden Boy Promotions because Oscar was giving Tequila a bad name.
"Our reputation is one we value dearly," said Tequila spokesperson Victor Alvarez. "We just can't associate ourselves with someone who tarnishes the name of Tequila by saying that drinking our product is not fun, especially when combined with drugs and fine, lovely ladies."
De La Hoya is said to be well aware of the disappointment he caused his fans and his community. According to those close to him, Oscar will take some personal time to himself but is committed to rebuilding his reputation with his followers once he returns.
Whether or not he'll win back his old supporters is yet to be seen, but one thing is for certain. He will never get the respect he's always yearned for from the Mexican community.
Even before his latest disappointments, most Mexicans already considered him not to be a genuine Mexican, and that feeling was reinforced three months ago when Oscar did something a Mexican would never do – Admit he has a drinking problem and check himself into rehab, willingly.
