Austin, TX -- Following dismal record sales and poor concert turnout among the new generation of bilingual Hispanics in the US, Los Tigres del Norte announced that they would be changing their name to The Northern Kitties in an attempt to recapture their young fan base.
Fonovisa Records, which manages the band, disclosed that the name change includes a contract with Disney Music to remake several of their classic hits and re-style them for today's bilingual, Hispanic Youth. Among the coming releases will be "The black door", "The table by the gloomy corner", "We're not even relatives", and "The boss of bosses".
Los Tigres del Norte dominated the Norteno scene since the end of the Mexican revolution in the 1920s, but their prominence began to wane in the past decade in both Mexico and the US, losing legions of young Hispanic fans to kitty acts such as Hannah Montana and Justin Beaver.
The pressure to remain hip and relevant in today's competitive music industry is said to have been too much to overcome without the name change, according to their band manager Carlos Osegueda, who stated that changing their name and the title of their songs was all that the band could realistically change at this point in their career.
Following in their footsteps are Los Tucanes de Tijuana, which are purportedly considering changing their name to The Toucan Sams, and Ramon Ayala, who is still contemplating whether Phat Raymond will have the intended effect.
